Pine Island Lake

Once a farmer’s meadow for grazing livestock a reservoir was created in 1871 up in the Northwest Part of town to provide power to mills downstream.  This body of water that resulted from flooding this land was called the Westhampton Reservoir now known as Pine Island Lake.

In 1925 the reservoir was sold to the Westhampton Recreation Corporation and small cottages were slowly built around it.  The first cottage was built on South Shore Rd and over time approximately 75 cottages have been built for people to spend their summers and some residents reside here year round.

Pine Island lake is a private lake sitting at 998’ above sea level consisting of approximately 60 acres with no public access.

Pine Island Lake is owned by private property owners and has been incorporated as a ‘not for
profit corporation’.

The lake is relatively shallow with an average depth of 7-10 feet with its deepest being about 13
feet near the area of the dam. It is a clean lake and no gas motors are allowed.

There are a variety of fish including bass trout and perch.  The entire pine island community consists of around 150 acres of property of which 32 acres is private property owned by individual members.  Two acres is corporation property and the other 116 acres is in conservation.

Pine Island lake is managed by the board of directors of the Pine Island Lake Association and controlled by it’s Bylaws and Rules and Regulations.
